Our history

Through hard work and commitment, ACRC has become the most active and well-known society inside the school. Today, we are proud to claim that as the Radio Club of Ananda college, we have achieved a prominent status in the field of Radio technology and we are unmatched by any other media school units on the island, and our goal is to bring pride and glory to our Mother Ananda through our transmissions in the Audio-visual field.

The Radio Club of Ananda College, founded on May 13, 1936, by Sir V. Kirithisinghe, holds a remarkable history of 87 years as the most senior radio club in the school's media landscape. Initially established as a small media group, the club aimed to cultivate the media skills of young Anandians. Over the years, it has evolved into a trailblazer in the realm of school-based media.
A significant milestone in the club's journey occurred in 1996 when it seized the opportunity to launch the first school-based FM transmission in Sri Lanka, named "Ananda Handa," operating on the frequency 96.1 FM. This groundbreaking initiative earned the club widespread acclaim and established it as a pioneer in school-based transmissions, garnering popularity among other school media clubs.
In a continual pursuit of innovation, the Radio Club of Ananda College organized the first electronic day, "Kalathraya," aligning it with the annual All-Island Radio Communication and Mass Media Quiz competition. "Kalathraya" aimed to impart knowledge about new technical advancements and skills to school media enthusiasts. Today, it stands as the most advanced Electronic Technology Day conducted by a school in Sri Lanka.
In 2005, the club once again demonstrated its forward-thinking approach by inaugurating the first-ever school-based TV transmission, "Ananda TV." This five-day transmission covered the entire Colombo area, deviating from the conventional norms and capturing the attention of schools throughout the region. This marked a significant shift in the landscape of school mass media, positioning the Radio Club of Ananda College as the most popular and active society within the school and the broader Sri Lankan context.
With a commitment to excellence and a legacy of pioneering initiatives, the Radio Club of Ananda College strives to make its alma mater proud, continuing to push boundaries and set new standards in the ever-evolving field of media and technology.
